STATE OF THE COUNTY ADDRESS
Harris Hall Main Floor - 10:00 a.m.

Chair Ellie Dumdi presided with Steve Cornacchia, Bobby Green, Sr., Jerry Rust and Cindy Weeldreyer present. Sharon Giles, Recording Secretary.

* State of the County Address.

Dumdi began her address by stating that 1995 should be called the year of partnerships (a complete copy of her statement is available on file). She emphasized the Board's focus on working cooperatively with other local governments, with constituents and with employees toward a system-wide approach. Dumdi highlighted activities related to the planned Juvenile Justice Center, creation of the Public Safety Coordinating Council, the Child Advocacy Center, human services and numerous other county endeavors. She briefly outlined the upcoming two-tier Sheriff's levy request and asked for voter support. Dumdi stressed that the biggest challenge continues to be Lane County's declining revenue base and she thanked Lane County employees who continue to do more with less. She expressed gratitude to Lane County's citizens who have volunteered their time to the benefit of Lane County.

* Recognition by the Chair.

Dumdi recognized Denis Hijmans for his help on the Juvenile Justice Center proposal and his untiring efforts in making it happen. She also recognized Jenny Ulum who has worked on numerous levies on behalf of Lane County. Dumdi recognized Joyce Strassberg, Lane County's retiring investment coordinator, for her years of service to Lane County. Dumdi also recognized Bob Keefer, head of Lane County's Parks Department, for his diligent efforts. Dumdi recognized Sharon Giles, County Administration, for her help and dedication throughout Dumdi's terms on the Board.

* Election of Chair and Vice-Chair.

Cornacchia NOMINATED Bobby Green, Sr. for chair and Cindy Weeldreyer for vice-chair. Rust SECONDED the nominations.

VOTE: 5-0.

* Recognition of Out-Going Chair.

Green echoed comments made by Dumdi and mentioned some highlights of his first year as a Lane County commissioner. He offered reinforcement of his previous platform as a proponent of working together as a team and being actively involved in intergovernmental relations. Green suggested that the County work toward recognition of "who and what is Lane County?" in order to make what is done more relevant. He stated that one of his goals is to increase public awareness of the services Lane County provides.

Green presented Dumdi with a humorous and a serious recognition gift, as well as the outgoing chair's commemorative gavel.

* Reception

There being no further business, this meeting adjourned to a reception in the Commissioners' Conference Room at 10:45 a.m.
