Reporting Dead Birds

Currently Lane County is testing birds that meet the following criteria:

The dead bird is a blue jay or crow
The bird has been dead for less than 24 hours
The specimen did not die from traumatic injuries (for example it was not hit by a car or killed by the cat)

To report a dead bird please call 682-3497 and have the following information ready:

The address where the crow or blue jay was found
A phone number where you can be reached

If you get a message or find the bird after normal business hours:

place the bird in a plastic bag and then put the bag into the freezer

Why do we Monitor Dead Birds?
Birds and horses typically become infected with West Nile virus (WNV) before humans, so dead birds and sick and dead horses are an indicator of WNV activity. We use animal surveillance (birds and horses) to help map the location of WNV. This helps health and mosquito control officials know where WNV is present.
