Legal Research Guides

 Index to Legal Research Guides

Summary:

Research guides provide practical information on how to find or use particular legal resources.  Included here is a topical index to research guides on different legal subjects, arranged by topic.   The Lane County Law Library has created guides which are specifically linked to items and resources in our collection and which focus on Oregon issues.  However, there are many other institutions that provide  practical guides for general or Oregon-based legal research, and several of those have been included here.

The source for each guide is identified by the location abbreviation following the title - and in some instances there are multiple guides available on the same topic.   Users can decide which guide or "teaching style" is best suited for his or her needs.    Our library staff can also provide suggestions about alternatives to specific resources not in Lane County's collection, or direct users to other libraries with similar materials available for public use.

How to find other research guides not on this index:

The guides which are included here represent only a small fraction of those that are available from law libraries and on the internet.  If you are interested in finding a research guide on a topic not listed here, you can use the  custom search engine   at Cornell's Law Library  (click  here.)  This search engine searches by topic or keyword through hundreds of guides provided by law libraries and nonprofit legal organizations.

Disclaimer:

Law library staff are prohibited by law from engaging in the unauthorized practice of law (ORS 9.160).  The staff are not permitted to give legal advice, but can assist patrons with locating legal resources or information.  Please note that legal information is not the same as legal advice .  If a patron needs legal advice for a specific legal situation, he/she should consult with an attorney.    For information about how to find an attorney in Oregon, check one of the research guides below (under "L" for lawyer) or contact the Oregon State Bar's Lawyer Referral Service.
