Parent Education Class for Divorcing and Separated Parents
Focus on Children is a court-required 2 ½ hour class designed to help parents respond to their children’s needs and minimize the negative impacts of divorce and separation. Parents’ ability to support their children during family transitions has a direct impact on how well children do in school, in the community, and in their personal relationships.
Topics covered include children’s needs during divorce or separation, parents’ rights and responsibilities, custody and parenting plans, when children are at risk, adjustment of children and parents to new family arrangements, and community resources.
You are required by the court to attend this class if you are the parent of a child under 18, AND you are a party in a Lane County dissolution (divorce), legal separation, or legal action to establish custody or parenting time (Lane County Circuit Court Local Rule 8.012). We encourage you to take the class as soon as possible to receive the maximum benefit. Petitioners should register within 15 days of filing and respondents within 30 days.
Attending Focus on Children does not fulfull a court order that you attend Mediation Orientation.
COST: $60 for each person who attends; $15 fee to reschedule
SCHEDULE: Classes are held every Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

If you are near or below the poverty line and would like to request a fee reduction, complete an Application for Fee Reduction below and submit the application to the Family Mediation Program.
If you live outside of Lane County, you may attend a similar class in your area. Court-approved classes in other counties are listed on our website. If no class is offered, complete a Waiver of Attendance application and submit the application to the Family Mediation Program.
