General Information
Bioterrorism is the deliberate release of viruses, bacteria, or other agents used to cause illness or death in people, animals, or plants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in partnership with state and local health departments, identifies and responds to bioterrorist threats and attacks.
LCPH plans for bioterrorism response include collaborative efforts with the local medical community. All plans are on-going in order to continually improve our ability to detect and respond to a bioterrorist attack. If a bioterrorist event occurs in Lane County , the public will be informed through news media and the LCPH website.

Anthrax
General Information
Anthrax is an acute bacterial disease. It is not very contagious. Anthrax most commonly occurs in wild and domestic: cattle, sheep, goats, camels, antelopes, and other herbivores. It can also occur in humans when they are exposed to infected animals or tissue from infected animals. Humans can become infected by inhaling, eating or touching the bacterial spores. Antibiotics can be affective in treating cases but success depends on when treatment is started and the amount of spores the individual has been exposed to.

Smallpox
General Information
Smallpox is an acute, contagious, and sometimes fatal disease caused by the variola virus. Common symptoms include a fever and a distinctive progressive skin rash. In 1980, the disease was declared eradicated following worldwide vaccination programs. However, in the aftermath of the events in 2001, the U.S. government is taking precautions to be ready to deal with a bioterrorist attack using smallpox as a weapon.
