Why does it cost so much to keep an inmate in jail?

The cost associated with holding inmates is driven by many factors. Most costs are mandated services the Sheriff must provide to inmates while in custody per state or federal law. Other costs are controlled by the number of inmate housing areas in current operation.

The FY 12/13 Jail operational budget is $19,146,798. While a significant portion of the budget is devoted to personnel, the category can be better defined as the cost to maintain inmate safety and security, maintain inmate jail records, administration and facilitate security of the corrections facility.

Inmate Welfare includes the costs associated with inmate laundry, janitorial supplies, safety equipment and building maintenance. Inmate Health includes medical, dental and mental health services.
