General Information
The Lane County WIC public health nutrition program is designed to promote lifetime nutrition and healthy behaviors in a targeted, at-risk population. Nutrition education is the cornerstone of the WIC Program. WIC is the special supplemental nutrition education program for pregnant and nursing women, infants and children.

Who WIC Serves
Lane County WIC enhances the health of our community by providing services to:

• Pregnant women.
• Breastfeeding women with children under 12 months of age.
• Non-breastfeeding women with children under 6 months of age.
• Infants and children under 5 years of age.
• Fathers, grandparents, foster parents or other guardians may apply for WIC for their children.

Eligibility Requirements 
Applicants must meet four criteria to be eligible for WIC:

1. Live in an area served by a WIC clinic (every geographical area in Oregonis served by WIC).
   • Be a pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding woman, infant or child under five years of age.
   • Have a household income less than 185% of poverty guidelines. (If you currently receive TANF, Food Stamps or the Oregon Health Plan (OHP), you are automatically eligible.)
   • Have a nutritional need or risk.

WIC Services
Lane County WIC provides the following services:

• Nutrition education (individual education and group classes)
• Breastfeeding promotion and support
• Breast pumps (in specific circumstances)
• Information and referral to other health programs like immunization and social service programs

Lane County WIC also provides monthly food vouchers for the following nutritious foods:

• milk
• eggs
• cereal
• juice
• beans
• cheese
• peanut butter
• infant formulas

The Oregon WIC Farm Direct Nutrition Program (FDNP) provides WIC families with coupons worth $20 to purchase fresh Oregon-grown fruits, vegetables and herbs during the growing season, along with information on how to prepare foods and their nutritional content. How WIC Helps Lane County Families

• WIC reduces fetal and infant deaths.
• WIC reduces low birth weight rates and increases the duration of pregnancy.
• WIC improves the growth of nutritionally at-risk infants and children.
• WIC decreases the incidence of iron deficiency anemia in children.
• WIC improves the dietary intake of pregnant and postpartum women and improves weight gain in pregnant women.
• Pregnant women participating in WIC receive prenatal care earlier.
• Children enrolled in WIC are more likely to have a regular source of medical care and have more up to date immunizations.
• WIC helps get children ready to start school: children who receive WIC benefits demonstrate improved intellectual development.
