Lane County will be part of a new coalition of county tax assessors and collectors in Southwest Oregon that will help counties provide better services at reduced costs to taxpayers.

"This new coalition is a step forward to provide better services to county residents at a lower cost to the County," said Sid Leiken, chair of the Lane County Board of Commissioners. "We are working with our neighboring counties who are facing many of the same challenges and together creating more efficient county governments."

The new coalition, to be called the Southwest Oregon Assessment and Taxation Coalition, will be comprised of Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, and Lane counties. These counties have been hit hard with reductions in timber revenue and federal timber payments and are having difficulty finding the resources necessary to provide essential services. Assessment and taxation is a critical service provided by the county to collect the necessary revenue for county operations.

The new coalition will collaborate on the assessment and taxation services, find efficiencies in how these services are delivered, and take advantage of any economies of scale. The goal will be to reduce costs while providing better services across counties in the coalition. In addition, the coalition will present a unified position on matters that affect county assessors and tax collectors to local, state, and federal agencies and officials.

The coalition was formed with the assistance of the Association of Oregon Counties and the Governor’s office.

Lane County Government will work to create a prosperous community by providing collaborative leadership, fair and inclusive decision-making and excellent sustainable local governmental services to our residents and guests.
