To the Community Members of Lane County,

On behalf of the Sheriff’s Office and all of our employees, I would like to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation to everyone who has supported, and continues to support, the Wattiers during this time of great challenge and need.

As many of you know, on November 30, 2012, Lane County Sheriff’s Deputy Drew Wattier and his wife Michelle Wattier were the victims of a hit and run accident while vacation in Los Cabos, Mexico.  They were pedestrians and were struck by a vehicle at high speed.  Thankfully, there were medically trained people nearby that offered care immediately after the accident, which likely saved their lives.

Drew and Michelle were admitted to a medical facility in Mexico where they were provided medical care until they were approved for air medical transport back to the United States.  They are currently at UC San Diego Medical Center receiving top notch medical care.

The employees of the Sheriff’s Office, other Lane County Employees, members of other law enforcement agencies, and community members came together en masse to help the family in the initial days after the accident, working long hours into the night with insurance companies and other governmental agencies to provide needed paperwork to the medical facilities in Mexico, and to get the family down to be with Drew and Michelle as soon as possible.

Since then, community members and businesses have come together to put on fundraisers and to collect donations to assist with medical expenses.  A Facebook page and web site were set up to help keep everyone in the loop with information on the couple’s medical status and to provide a place for people to voice their well wishes.  The outpouring of support is unlike anything we have ever experienced, and we are so very grateful to be part of this community.

Drew and Michelle have a very long road ahead of them, and there will likely be more people to thank in the coming days, weeks, and months, but it is important that we let you know that we are extremely appreciative of the efforts that have been put forth to assist the Wattier family in getting well and eventually coming home.

With Sincerest Thanks,

Sheriff Tom Turner
