Lane County Debuts Event Recycle Bins at Bohemia Mining Days
Contacts: Sarah Grimm, waste reduction specialist, 682-4339; Sharon Jean, Bohemia Mining Days, 942-5064
Lane County Public Works Waste Management Division will roll out its new Event Recycling Bin program at the upcoming Bohemia Mining Days Celebration in Cottage Grove. The program, made possible by a $10,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), will provide public events in the county with free use of recycling bins.
The County’s purchase of recycling bins and a television advertising campaign is intended to help popular rural events reduce the amount of recyclable materials that end up in the garbage and instead feed that material into the local economy.
"The City of Eugene has had great success with the event recycling program its offered for several years now," Lane County Waste Prevention Specialist Sarah Grimm said. "This program seeks to give rural residents and events access to equal opportunities in resource management."
The bins, which will be available for free to any public event, large or small, are currently slated to be used by Bohemia Mining Days, Scandinavian Festival, Blackberry Jam, Living History Festival and Oakridge's Mt. Bike Festival. They will also be available to augment efforts to recycle at the Lane County Fair and the 2008 Olympic Track and Field Trials.
Events interested in borrowing bins may contact the waste reduction specialist office at 682-4339. The event is responsible for picking up and returning the bins in good condition, along with any unused supplies. In some cases, assistance and consultation will be available to maximize material recovery. The identifiable blue recycling bins will be placed directly next to each trash bin at participating events.
The Lane County Fair has already had success using recycling bins. When the Fair began recycling for first the time in 2000, the waste recovery rate for the event improved by almost 20 percent over the previous year. Last year, the Lane County Fair spent less than $6,000 on recycling staff, and saved over $11,000 in avoided disposal costs.
