Board of Commissioners Appoints 11 New Volunteer Members to Commission for the Advancement of Human Rights
Contact: Sascha Cosio, Program Specialist, 682-3747
In an ongoing show of support for human rights initiatives in Lane County, the Board of Commissioners enacted an order Tuesday approving the appointment of 11 new volunteer members to the Commission for the Advancement of Human Rights.
Comprised of five Board appointed liaisons and six at-large members, the Commission’s charge is to monitor human rights abuses and advocate for Lane County residents seeking guidance. The new Commission replaces the defunct Human Rights Advisory Committee; disbanded in June of 2006. The previous Human Rights Advisory Committee appealed to the Board of Commissioners to allow it more capacity for true advocacy versus its current role as an advisory committee.
In Board approved order from October 2007, the newly named and organized Commission for the Advancement of Human Rights will advocate and reach out into Lane County’s rural communities to provide community education concerning human rights programs within Lane County; recommend, support, and assist in development of programs and seminars on human rights, cultural diversity, equal opportunity, and affirmative action; develop and publicize a system to assist persons in seeking resolution of harassment and discrimination complaints and recommend appropriate action; recommend policies and actions to improve access to County services and employment opportunities, and for overcoming cultural, linguistic and physical barriers which limit accessibility; provide an annual report to the Board of County Commissioners on the progress and condition of human rights in Lane County (including past activities, future goals and the number, type, and resolution of complaints).
