Smokey Air Raises Health Concerns for Sensitive People
Contact: Lane County Public Health Nursing Supervisor Betsy Meredith, 682-4041
Lane County Public Health authorities are encouraging members of the community who are sensitive to particulates in the air to take precautions to prevent potentially serious respiratory and related problems.
"With smokey air coming in to the Willamette Valley, people with asthma and those who are elderly or the very young may be vulnerable to asthma attacks or breathing difficulty," said Betsy Meredith, Lane County Public Health nursing supervisor. "Coupled with the heat and seasonal allergens, some Lane County residents and visitors may need to take precautions to prevent health problems."
What You Can Do to Help Protect Your Health Against Air Pollution
Stay inside in air-conditioned environments. If you exercise, do so indoors
Decrease your activity level. When air is polluted, exercise less strenuously or for less time.
Listen to your body. If you get asthma symptoms when the air is polluted, stop your activity and do something less intense.
Keep quick-acting asthma medication with you when you are active outdoors.
Consult with your health care professional. Follow your doctor’s recommendations for prevention and treatment of asthma or breathing problems.
Assure that you are drinking adequate amounts of non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic fluids.
Visitors to Lane County may be surprised and unprepared for the unanticipated smoky air. Visitors experiencing respiratory difficulties have resources to access necessary health care. During an emergency, 911 should be called. For non-emergent medical access, check with the front desk where you are staying for referral information to available health care providers in the area.
