Commissioners Appoint Interim Fairgrounds Managing director; Will Reinstate Fair Board

Contact: Lane County Administrator Jeff Spartz, 682-4203

In a unanimous decision, the Lane County Board of Commissioners has voted to create a new organizational structure for the Fairgrounds.

Last week, the Board approved a plan that will transition Fairgrounds employees into the County’s Human Resource system to become a division or department of County government. The plan also divides the operation of the annual fair from the management of the Events Center and grounds. The Fair Board will be reconstituted this summer and have authority to operate the Fair beginning in 2009. The Fairgrounds managing director is responsible for the facilities and all non-fair events.

Recruitment efforts are underway to replace managing director Warren Wong, who retired June 30. From July 1 to mid-July, Val Major (current Lane County Events Center deputy director and business manager) will serve as acting managing director. On or about July 15 until about October 15, Don Hillman, will serve as acting managing director and consultant to Lane County. Hillman was selected because of his extensive experience in fair management, which includes the Cal Expo and the Washington County Fair. Hillman will not be a candidate for the permanent managing director position.

Applications to serve on the Fair Board are being accepted. This Board serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Commissioners. The Fair Board is responsible for the planning, production and oversight of the Lane County Fair and for processing of policy or program issues that may arise. There are five vacancies. Terms are three years. Meetings will be held as determined by the Fair Board. The deadline to apply is Friday, August 1, 2008.

Applications are available in the Board of Commissioner’s Office, in the Public Service Building, 125 E. Eighth Ave., Eugene. For additional information or to request applications please call 682-4203.
