Do you know of an exceptional recycling or waste reduction activity? Nominate them for public recognition. Application forms are available on the “Forms” tab of www.lanecounty.org
Lane County’s Resource Recovery Advisory Committee (RRAC) is seeking nominations for the annual Trashbuster Awards program. Now in its 15th year, this program gives public recognition to the important efforts and advancements in business and personal recycling efforts.
Since 1993, the Lane County Board of Commissioners has presented these awards to give public recognition to those businesses and citizens that make efforts to protect our environment and our future by reducing reusing and recycling.
The program not only provides an incentive to businesses to do the right thing, it also provides great examples of how all of us can make simple changes that save the environment.
“I love describing what winners did to qualify for this award,” said Sarah Grimm, waste prevention specialist for Lane County. “It provides great inspiration to others about how recycling is good for business, for the environment and more often than not, our pocketbooks too.”
This year the RRAC added a new category for restaurant recognition. There are now 10 different categories available for award winners including: Individual, Local Government, K-12 School, Special Event, Non profit, Business, Construction Project, Product Manufacturer, and Restaurant.
Last year, Lane County Fair was recognized for its Zero Waste Event efforts, Adams Elementary School received attention for its composting program, the popular local food booth Get Fried Rice was recognized for success in operating with durable dishware, Springfield Marcola Family Center was awarded for its work with UO Housing to reuse the tons of nearly new materials discarded by exiting students each June. Willard Petersen a stalwart volunteer for NextStep Recycling was given the Individual Trashbuster Award, and both Holy Cow Foods and Hynix Semiconductor were recognized for their exemplary business waste prevention ethics and actions.
Application deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5. Applications can be found on the “Forms” tab of www.lanecounty.orgor contact Sarah Grimm at 682-4339 or sarah.grimm@co.lane.or.us.
All applications will be reviewed by the Resource Recovery Advisory committee which will make its recommendations to the Board. Award winners will be announced and presented in conjunction with America Recycles Day in mid November.
