The equipment collected through the Electronics Recycling Program will go into one of two streams: a RECYCLING stream and/or a REUSE stream.
The Recycling stream
Lane County has contracted with Earth Protection Services Inc. for transportation, dismantling, and recycling electronic devices. At the Glenwood Central Receiving Station, Lane County staff will load materials from your car into trailers. The electronic devices will be shipped to Tigard, OR to be dismantled.
Drives, cables, wire, printers and power supplies go to Metro Metals in Vancouver, Washington, to be shredded and separated into ferrous and non-ferrous metal and fluff (various plastics – used as an alternative daily coverage for landfills.) Note: All drives are destroyed on a daily basis through the shredding process.
Computer circuit boards are processed at a Hallmark Refining Company in Mt. Vernon, Washington. Hallmark refining shreds the material, then sends the shredded materials to a refining facility, Noranda in Canada or Umicore, in Belgium.
Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) are sent to Doe Run Lead Smelter in Missouri. The lead is extracted from the glass and re-entered in the commodity market, commonly in the form of lead-acid batteries.
Batteries are separated by type and sent to INMETCO in Pennsylvania for processing.
Plastic exterior cases for computers and televisions will be baled and shipped to Salt Lake City for recycling.
The Reuse stream
NextStep Recycling (formerly known as The Computer Reuse and Recycling Center) in Eugene is contracted to reuse and refurbish computers that come through the Lane County Electronics Recycling program.
The mission of NextStep Recycling is to place refurbished computers into the hands of folks who would not otherwise have access to computer technology. Located at 2101 West 10th Ave, they are open Tuesday through Saturday 10 am - 6pm. Call 686-2366 for more information.
Note: NextStep Recycling Center will destroy information on all drives in accordance with the U.S. Department of Defense standards (erased 3 times) before computer is reused.
