Permitted Products List:
Following adoption of Ordinance No. 12-03, “Roadside Vegetation Management and Last Resort Herbicide Use Policy” in August 2003, a moratorium on use of herbicides by Lane County Road Maintenance personnel was ordered.  The moratorium has been in effect since that time, pending creation of a Permitted Products List for the Ordinance.

This page is intended to be a resource for interested parties to review products on the Permitted Products List.  Lane County, Department of Public works has worked to establish a products list that is unique to Lane County vegetation issues and concerns, while seeking to minimize both human health and environmental impacts.  Over thirty five herbicides were evaluated during the selection process, and five herbicides have been approved by County Commissioners for roadside application.  The list criteria, selection process, goals and review process are detailed below to provide a framework of the decision process that placed the selected herbicides on the Permitted Products List.

I.  List Criteria:

• Satisfied Requirements of Last Resort Policy, Ordinance 12-03 Sec. (4) A-E
• Satisfied Requirements of Last Resort Policy, Ordinance 12-03 Sec. (5) B-E
• Consider soil half-life as an important feature in selection process. Ordinance 12-03 Sec. (5) A.
• Available herbicides that are highly effective in low volume use rates
• Herbicides specific to Lane County vegetation issues and management.

II. Selection Process:

Lane County, Department of Public works selected five herbicides to establish the Permitted Products List that fulfills all requirements of the Last Resort Policy.  These five herbicides were selected from a list of over thirty five based upon both their effectiveness to control problematic vegetation, and their minimized potential impacts to human health and the environment.  

III. Goals:

The goals for selecting herbicides for the Permitted Products List and associated treatment strategies included;

• Minimal impact on non-target species
• Least damaging to long-term impacts on the environment
• Least hazardous to human health
• Preserves function of the natural ecosystem.
• Least disruptive of natural controls that are present

IV. List Review:

The Permitted Products List will be reviewed annually in an effort to stay current with research and management regarding herbicides.  This review will allow for products to either be added or deleted from the list based upon numerous factors that include;

• Current management needs

• Efficacy of selected herbicide
• Environmental & human health research
• Public Comment
• Field observations
• New product development
• New research and Information
• Staff knowledge
• Board of Health Review
