The Corrections Division operates traditional and alternative programs for offenders who are either pretrial or sentenced to the custody of the Sheriff.

The Main Jail facility was constructed in 1979, with new additions completed in 1988 and 1999. The total designed capacity is 507 beds. The facility serves as the division intake and release center, but also houses all pretrial offenders, and offenders with charges that prevent them from entering one of our less costly alternative custody programs.

Due to insufficient funding, 191 beds are currently closed. Of the remaining 316 operational beds, 200 are contract beds (U.S. Marshal's, SB1145, Eugene Municipal Court, and Springfield Municipal Court). Additionally, the county is only allowed to use 93 percent of it's total available beds due to a federal consent decree. The remaining 94 beds are available for local offenders.

Every inmate is classified at entry into the Corrections Division based upon their current charges, past criminal acts, their past institutional behavior, current institutional behavior, and number of other factors that indicate how the individual will function while in custody.

All inmates receive three nutritionally balanced meals each day, have daily access to showers and telephones and may purchase commissary items. They receive clean clothes and bedding twice a week. Based upon their individual classification, inmates may or may not have access to outside recreation each week and/or have daily access to television. The Corrections Division provides medical, dental, and psychiatric care to all inmates who are in need of these services.

A number of programs are provided to inmates to assist them in becoming more responsible citizens upon their release. All qualified inmates, whether sentenced or not, may participate in education programs which include GED, alcohol and drug use education, and religious services.
