The Sheriff's Oregon Dunes Patrol is staffed by a deputy through a grant fund from Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department's ATV Fund and federal reimbursements to Lane County. This unit provides law enforcement, emergency medical response, search & rescue, and public education services to visitors frequenting this beautiful recreation area. Trained reserve deputies routinely assist on weekends, holidays and with special events.

Calendar Year 2004 Operations
Deputies completed 6,161 citizen contacts, with 675 enforcement actions, 32 arrests and 133 motorist assists during 2002. Approximately 2/3 of the expense for these functions are funded by Oregon State Parks off-road-vehicle fees; the remainder is reimbursed via the federal "Secure Rural Schools and and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000,” reducing the overall General Fund burden to Lane County property tax payers.

The Dunes Patrol works in close cooperation with US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, United States Coast Guard, Suislaw Valley Fire & Rescue, Western Lane Ambulance, City of Florence Police and Oregon State Police in providing emergency services to the special access areas the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and the Joshua Dunes (near Florence) encompass.
Improved user safety is a primary focus for this service.
