Sheriff's Forestland Emergency Services

The “Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination act of 2000” (P.L. 106-393,) allows for provision of emergency services on federal forestlands.  Lane County developed and implemented deputies and support staff to patrol and respond to calls-for-service involving these federal lands. A sergeant, an investigator and four deputy sheriff’s are assigned policing, search & rescue (SAR) and emergency medical responsibilities related to the three National Forests and BLM lands in Lane County.

This program works closely with existing patrol, investigations and SAR operations to provide a visible presence on federal properties.  Liaison with federal agencies provides an emergency response capability new to Lane County in this decade.  In addition to reported crimes, deputies attend to illegal drug operations, dumping of stolen/abandoned automobiles, environmental enforcement, enhanced marine functions, initial fire response, follow-on support and homeowner fire educational programs.

Deputies in the Forestland Emergency assignment complete an intensive 10-week course which included federal policing procedures, private timber security, fish & game regulation, explosive disposal and drug lab briefings, marijuana eradication, managing search operations, helicopter operations, first responder medical training, incident command system operations, marine operations, a man-tracking course and advanced GPS operations/map reading.
