Sheriff's Patrol

Main Office Patrol responds to emergency calls for police services on a 24-hour basis and protects the lives and property of Lane County residents through the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of persons who commit crimes.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office has a total of 18 sworn deputies and 5 sergeants covering a geographical area of 4,618 square miles (approximately the size of Connecticut) with an unincorporated area population of 103,452.

The Traffic Safety Team assists with an additional 12 deputies in a back-up capacity to the main office, aiding in life threatening calls for service.  Having the two contract cities of Veneta and Creswell requires both Traffic Team and the Main Office deputies respond to aid in high risk calls for service.  This staffing level is less than 0.5 deputies to every 1,000 citizens, as compared to the Western States average of 1.8 deputies to every 1,000 citizens.

Calendar Year 2004 Operations

In addition to responding to crimes in-progress, deputies conduct preliminary criminal investigation and take crime reports, apprehend offenders, conduct patrol checks, investigate injury and fatal traffic collisions, domestic and dispute situations, attend community appearances, provide civil standby's, civil paper process service, and mutual aid to other law enforcement. Limited traffic enforcement on County roadways is provided during unobligated patrol time.  Currently, five trained reserve deputies assist in a volunteer capacity.

2004 service levels resulted in 94,054 calls-for-service, 12,885 case file numbers and 12,885 traffic citations, including 692 DUII arrests.
