Sheriff's Crime Reporting
All calls-for-service received by the Lane County Sheriff's Office are assessed through the Communications Center. Our preference would be to always provide a deputy sheriff to assist you, but resources available to provide this service level do not exist. After discussions with stakeholders, property crimes are assigned a lower priority than crimes against persons. In most circumstances this means a deputy will not be assigned to come to your home or business to complete a crime report. Communications Officers have been directed to use this Citizen Self Report (CSR) process on most property crimes: thefts, theft from vehicles, criminal mischief, etc. The Sheriff's Office continues to dispatch deputies when the crime involves entry into a building or dwelling, with additional criminal acts occurring inside.
You can file a property crime report by completing the Citizen Self Report form and mailing or hand-delivering it to the Lane County Sheriff's Office located at 125 E. 8th Avenue, Eugene, OR 97401. The form must be submitted by mail, or in person. It cannot be faxed, or submitted electronically. The Sheriff's Office is located in the Lane County Courthouse. The most convenient access is from the Oak Street entrance. Once inside the building, overhead signs will direct you to the Sheriff's Office Central Reception area. If you have questions, please contact our office at (541) 682 -3775. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday - we are closed on holidays.
IF YOU PRINT OUT A CITIZEN SELF REPORT FORM FOR SUBMITTAL TO THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE, WE ASK THAT YOU ALSO PRINT A COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT CRIME VICTIM INFORMATION TO ENSURE THAT YOU'RE AWARE OF YOUR RIGHTS (see link and detail below).
These reports are used to place descriptions of stolen property in law enforcement computer systems and are shared with agencies who monitor property re-sale stores (pawn shops.) While the Sheriff's Office presently has no detective assigned to property crime investigation, reporting your incident and any stolen property can speed its return if it is located. The statistical information allows shift supervisors to direct available patrols to areas experiencing higher crime rates.
When you have filled in the relevant information, please call our Communications Center (682-4141) to complete the case number entry. Make and keep a copy of the report for insurance purposes before mailing.
The Lane County District Attorney's Office - Victim Services Program provides information for crime victims and community resources.
