Sheriff's Complaint Process

Introduction

The Lane County Sheriff has the mandate to insure that a well-defined procedure exists for the investigation of complaints against department personnel and answering inquiries regarding our procedures.

The employees of the Sheriff's Office are carefully selected, highly trained and serve with a pride of professionalism. However, as in any large organization, deviations from ideal performance occur. Allegations of misconduct against department personnel are investigated thoroughly and objectively, with the goals of maintaining the integrity of the Sheriff's Office and the confidence of the public.

Procedure

Every citizen has the right to make a complaint against any employee of the Sheriff's Office. The complaint may be made to any supervisor, shift commander, division commander, or to the Office of the Sheriff. A complaint may be made in person, by telephone, by mail, or e-mail.  Complaints may also be made anonymously or by a person not involved in an arrest.

Any Sheriff's Office employee will be able to direct you appropriately in the event you wish more information about an issue/complaint or help you make an inquiry in person.

Telephone complaints are generally received through the Sheriff's Communications Center and forwarded to the involved employee's supervisor, section leader or division commander. Current telephone numbers are located on the division and section webpages.

Mail complaints can be accomplished by completing the COMPLAINT INVESTIGATION FORM , and mailing it to the division commander or Office of the Sheriff.

E-mail complaints should include the same information as included on the Complaint Investigation Form. Using this E-MAIL button will direct your complaint to the commander for Police Services Division.

It is important to include as much information as is known about an incident. All complaints will be reviewed and reporting parties will be advised of dispositions per existing policy.
