- Almost one in two youth who begin drinking alcohol before the age of 14 become alcohol dependent at some time in their lives, compared with 10% of those who wait until they are 21. (1)
- One in four 9-12th graders had their first drink of alcohol, other than a few sips, before age 13. (2)
- Two-thirds of eighth graders and 82% of 11th graders say it is easy or somewhat easy to get beer, wine or hard liquor. (Usually from parties, friends or taking it from their homes.) (3)

- Youth listen to their parents – Eighth graders who said their parents think it is “wrong or very wrong” to drink were 2 ˝ times less likely to drink and 4 times less likely to binge than those who said their parents think it is “a little bit wrong or not wrong at all”. (3)
- Between 2001 and 2005, youth exposure to alcohol advertising on television in the US increased by 41%. Much of this increase resulted from the rise in distilled spirits advertising on television from 1,973 ads in 2001 to 46,854 ads in 2005. (4)
Consequences:
- Risky sexual behavior, including unwanted, and unprotected sex, and sex with multiple partners
- Increased risk of physical and sexual assault
- Risk of academic failure
- Risk of illicit drug and tobacco use
- Negatively affected memory and decision-making skills
- Injury or death
