Please take a moment to read the article which summarizes research findings from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Here is the sobering news:
  • 30% of Lane County 8th graders drank alcohol in the last month.
  • If they continue to drink frequently, half of them may eventually become dependent/addicted to alcohol or other drugs.

Here is the good news for adults who care for and about young people:
  • Telling your child what your hopes and dreams are for them shows them that they are full, love, possibility. This is a powerful deterrent from their starting to drink.
  • Telling them that you do not want them to drink alcohol is setting a clear goal for them.
  • Consistently asking them who they are with, where they are going, what they will be doing and when they will be back, shows them that you care and are watching them (even if they say they hate it when you do it).
  • Kissing and smelling them when they come home shows them that you are watching them and paying attention to their safety.

This phone number will connect you to treatment help in Lane County: 1-800-422-7558 (the 24 hour alcohol, drug, gambling information and referral line).

Please also know that the Lane County Coalition to Prevent Substance Abuse seeks to reduce community wide risk factors that lead people to drink irresponsibly - the coalition is always interested in your feedback and volunteerism.
