Deputy Sheriff

Deputy Sheriff vacancies available to outside applicants are in the Corrections Division.

 

Deputy Sheriff - Corrections:  Maintain custody and surveillance of inmates confined in a correctional facility; observe, report, and control behavior and address physical condition; escort inmates and/or the public within the correction facility; supervise and instruct inmates in various work and rehabilitation programs; process inmates for intake, release or court.

Minimum Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years of age.  Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th Grade, preferably supplemented by two years of college. Possession of a current Oregon driver's license and two years of experience dealing with the public.

Communications/Records Officer    

Most vacancies occur in Central Control, Reception and Call-Taking/Dispatch. New employees are most likely to be assigned to one of these areas.

 

Corrections Central Control: Coordinate movement of inmates and staff in the corrections facility; monitor alarm systems; maintain security of building; work in closed environment.

Corrections Reception: Answer phones; extensive contact with public; operate computer system; maintain security area. 

Call-Taking/Dispatch: Answer multi-line phone, which includes two direct lines from the 9-1-1 center; process emergency and non-emergency calls; dispatch officers in response to calls; operate computer-aided dispatch system; maintain related record-keeping functions.

Police and Corrections Records: Maintain manual and automated file systems, operate various computer systems, answer phones, may interview prisoners, contact with the public and criminal justice agencies, process complex court orders, may handle cash and inmate property.

Minimum Qualifications:
Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade. A current Oregon driver's license and keyboarding speed of 35 net wpm and one year working with the public.

Reserve Deputy Sheriff

Reserve deputies provide volunteer law enforcement services of a temporary nature. Reserve deputies are sworn and possess full deputy authority. Reserve deputies work along with a regular deputy and may be assigned other duties for which they are deemed qualified.

Ways to qualify :  For "experienced" applicants only, must have graduated from a certified academy from any state and with two years of active duty (fulltime or Reserve) within the previous five years.
