Assessor Mike Cowles receives 2019 Excellence in Office Leadership Award

Lane County Assessor Mike Cowles has been selected as the 2019 Excellence in Office Leadership Award by Thomson Reuters. The award recognizes assessors who display high levels of leadership and accountability within their office to deliver excellent service to their community.

 

“This award is an honor and truly a reflection of the great leadership and dedication of our entire staff rather than an individual,” said Cowles. “We are committed to providing great customer service to our community and the districts on behalf of which we collect revenue.”

 

According to the award summary: “Mike Cowles has demonstrated excellent leadership for the entire Assessment and Taxation offices here at Lane County. From setting, correcting, and enhancing guidelines for property assessment, through process improvement within the department is several key areas […] This has enabled his team of experts to be more efficient, improve data accuracy, and minimize problems for property owners and those who rely on the data both in-house and external to the County.”

 

The summary also notes that Cowles has knowledge of virtually every step and contributing process [to Assessment & Taxation] and that he holds a high reputation with districts across Oregon due to his willingness to share knowledge, ideas, and resources, and assistance with other jurisdictions.

 

Cowles has served as Lane County’s assessor and tax collector since 2013. He began his career at Lane County in 1991 as a property appraiser. He has worked as a sales data analyst, appraiser and appraiser analyst, among other roles, during his 28 years in the field. Cowles graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor’s in business and in hotel, restaurant and tourism management in 1990.

 

The award was presented at a conference in Virginia on September 25. Thomson Reuters produced a video honoring Cowles. The video is available online.

 

Cowles was previously recognized as a 2017 Public Sector Champion by Thomson Reuters. The Public Sector Champion Awards recognize individuals and jurisdictions that serve their communities with excellence, leadership and accountability.

There are more than 179,000 taxable properties in Lane County. The total taxable value for all properties in Lane County was $34.2 billion in 2018.
