Fix-it Booths a great chance to get your bike, mobility devices up to speed

Also in this section:

It’s summer, which means it’s repair season again.

Lane County residents with broken or damaged household items seeking a free fix can visit Fix-It Booths in
Cottage Grove, Florence (at the Farmers Market and Habitat for Humanity) and Oakridge from now through early fall, thanks to a program sponsored by Waste Wise Lane County (Lane County Waste Management).Benjamin Adams

This is the second season for the Fix-It Booth program, which launched last year.

Unlike larger Fix-It Fairs, which feature multiple repair experts at a single event, the Fix-It Booth model offers a single fixer at a time, allowing for more frequent repair opportunities. This approach ensures that rural communities have ongoing access to repair services, reducing waste and saving residents money.

Booth fixers specialize in a wide variety of repairs, including bikes and mobility devices, leather accessories, power tools, clothing, jewelry, small appliances, phones and much more. Each booth fixer will specialize in different repairs, so make sure to check the repair calendar before attending. See schedules and locations at fixitlanecounty.org/calendar.

Last year, approximately 100 residents—divided between Cottage Grove, Florence, and Oakridge—received free repair services from 16 program fixers. Approximately 90 of those items were successfully fixed, meaning they were diverted from the trash, and put back into use.

The program is also partnered with community organizations such as Shift Community Cycles, the Lane Council of Governments, Florence Habitat for Humanity, Florence Farmers Market, Westfir-Oakridge Community Farmers Market, Upper Willamette Soil and Water Conservation District, and the South Valley Farmers Market for operational, venue, and financial support.

In addition to the Fix-It Booths, Waste Wise Lane County will also host a traditional Fix-It Fair in Springfield later this year on Sept. 20 at BRING. The city of Eugene is also hosting Fix-It Booths at the Lane County Farmers Market.

Shift Fixing BikeThe Lane County Transportation Equity Assessment (LCTEA) is hosting its fourth of nine community forums on Friday, July 17, 4-6 p.m., at the Fern Ridge Service Station (25035 W. Community input from the forums along with responses to this Survey (
English, Spanish) will be analyzed and results shared back to the community before being presented to planners at the city, county, and state level. It will also help inform the Community Health Improvement Plan.

This summer, go a safe speed and don't ride e-motos

Contact: Willow Hamilton, City of Eugene

Phone: (541) 729-4188

Not every "electric bike" you see for sale is truly a legal e-bike. Some are actually electric motorcycles, which are not allowed to be ridden on bike paths, streets, bike lanes, sidewalks or any public spaces. This is not an E-Bike

If an “e-bike” can go over 20 miles per hour (MPH) without pedaling, then it's not an e-bike. It's an e-moto and illegal to ride everywhere in Eugene except private property. This is true even if it was sold as an e-bike.

How to tell the difference
  • Legal e-bikes must have working pedals.
  • Legal e-bikes cannot exceed 20 MPH without pedaling (by using a throttle).
  • Some legal e-bikes can reach 28 MPH, but only by pedaling and having the motor help.
  • Under Oregon law, legal e-bikes are bicycles, not motor vehicles.
  • E-motos can exceed 20 MPH without pedaling (using a throttle) and are often capable of reaching speeds between 30-70 MPH or higher.
  • E-motos may have functional pedals, fake pedals, or pegs instead of pedals.
  • Under Oregon law, e-motos are not bicycles, they are motor vehicles.
If you are thinking about buying yourself or a family member an e-bike, don't get fooled by online retailers selling over-powered and dangerous unclassified vehicles as e-bikes. Visit a local bike shop and tell them you want a legal e-bike that can be ridden on our paths and streets.

The speed limit on Eugene's paths is 12 MPH when others are present and 20mph if you're alone. No exceptions. If you see electric motorcycles, other overpowered vehicles, speeding, or reckless riding on the paths, please report them to MyPDConnect (
epd.mypdconnect.com). For more information, visit eugene-or.gov/BikeLaws.
