Animals in Disaster

In the event of a declared community disaster Lane County Animal Services (LCAS) will work closely with Greenhill Humane Society, Lane County Search & Rescue, and the Lane County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse to meet the needs of both companion animals and livestock.

Lane County Animal Service’s will oversee temporary livestock sheltering and lead animal search, rescue and shelter in place operations. Depending on the location and extent of the disaster Greenhill may use their current campus in West Eugene or operate an off-site temporary shelter to care for companion animals as needed.

Community support is critical to the success of saving animals in disaster. Pre-planning for an emergency is the best thing animal owners can do to save lives!

If you have already created your own family emergency preparedness plan and are interested in supporting your community in the event of a disaster, please consider volunteering. Positions are available for all skill levels with LCAS and with Greenhill Humane Society. A passion to serve and the ability to follow directions are essential. Formal training and credentialing opportunities are coming soon (2022).

Preference may be given to volunteers who have recent animal experience and have completed the free Incident Command Structure self-study courses online.

Volunteering

**New volunteer information coming soon**

An effective response during a large scale emergency will require the activation of many community volunteers. Volunteers will aid in staffing temporary shelters, staffing rescue efforts, and providing care to animals.
