A recent Kalapuya High School graduate is now an inmate in the Lane County Jail after allegedly shooting at two people two weeks apart, including at a 27-year-old man on Waite Street in west Eugene last week who was taken to the hospital for a bullet wound to the shoulder.

Demitrey Scott Dougherty, 18, was arrested Thursday evening on charges of first-degree assault, attempted first-degree assault and two counts of unlawful use of a firearm for two separate shootings, on July 28 and Aug. 11.

Separately, a 17-year-old was arraigned in juvenile court Thursday on charges of attempted first-degree assault and unlawful use of a firearm for his alleged participation in the same July shooting. The Register- Guard typically does not name alleged juvenile offenders.

The charging documents do not indicate that the victim in July was injured. Like the alleged Waite Street victim, that victim is also from Eugene, court records show. He has four active warrants for his arrest for separate unrelated cases that mostly involve drugs. Although Dougherty appears to be the only one charged in the August shooting, Eugene police at the time of the incident made a plea to the public for help locating a red Volkswagen Jetta that was reportedly the shooting suspect’s vehicle. A citation issued to the juvenile in the July case shows he was driving a red Volkswagen Jetta when he was given a speeding ticket by Oregon State Police in March for going 99 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 5, court records show.

On Thursday, Lane County Health and Human Services spokesman Jason Davis said Measure 11 charges are pending against the juvenile. If Measure 11 charges are filed, the youth could potentially be charged in adult court.

Kalapuya High School is an alternative high school in the Bethel School District.
