Rumble Strip Installation

Rumble strips were installed on Marcola Road (milepost 3.0 to 10.4) in the summer of 2018, along with several other County roads, as part of Lane County’s systemic approach to safety and commitment Toward Zero Deaths. Rumble strips are a proven low-cost, high-safety-benefit countermeasure to roadway departures which is the leading crash type of all fatal collisions in rural Lane County.

Rumble strips are grooves in the pavement that create an audible vibration to alert the driver that they are drifting outside the travel lane, enabling the motorist to self-correct and avoid a head-on collision or roadway departure which are the most fatal collisions in Lane County. The safety benefit of the noise, however, can negatively impact the quality of life for people living near the road. Traffic safety is a complex problem and there are no easy solutions; there are tradeoffs and limited resources that affect implementation of safety measures.
