Spring Creek Drive Traffic Calming Pilot

Lane County developed its first traffic calming pilot on Spring Creek Drive. The project came about after County staff received requests from community members for speed cushions in the Santa Clara and River Road neighborhoods. Staff also heard concerns from community members about the dangerous speeding that was taking place outside of Awbrey Park Elementary School.

Lane County traffic services conducted speed studies directly in front of Awbrey Park Elementary school and discovered that the average speed of drivers is about 35 mph – and this includes during the school day.

In response, Lane County Public Works constructed speed cushions along Spring Creek Drive in the summer of 2023.

Why Speed Cushions?

Speeding is dangerous for all users of the road, but especially for pedestrians. The risk of serious injury and death continues to rise dramatically as speeds exceed 30 mph. Speed cushions reduce passenger vehicle speeds by 5 mph on average. This can make a difference between life and death.

Project Details:

Eight speed cushions were constructed along Spring Creek Drive. These cushions are designed to allow for mobility devices and large vehicles, especially emergency vehicles, to pass unaffected. Signage has been placed on the east and west ends of the road to notify drivers of the presence of speed cushions ahead. Construction was completed in the summer of 2023.
