Howard Buford Recreation Area (HBRA) set to reopen on Friday, March 15
Posted on 03/01/2024

After weeks of extensive cleanup and restoration efforts, Howard Buford Recreation Area (HBRA) is thrilled to announce it is reopening to the public on Friday, March 15.

The reopening follows significant damage caused by the January 2024 ice storm, which rendered the park inaccessible and unsafe for visitors. Thanks to the dedicated work of park staff, volunteers, and partner organizations, HBRA is once again ready to welcome people back to enjoy this incredible park.

"We are excited to reopen HBRA and provide the community with a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience," said Lane County Parks Manager Brett Henry. "The support and hard work of everyone involved in the cleanup and restoration efforts have been instrumental in making this reopening possible.  We are grateful for the collaboration with the Mount Pisgah Arboretum, Friends of Buford Park and Mt. Pisgah, Lane County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, Lane County Road Maintenance, and Scorpions trail crew.”

While there has been significant damage to some of the most popular trails, temporary stabilization measures have been implemented using gravel to ensure safe use until major repairs can be undertaken in the summer or fall of 2024. Future repairs may require closure during the most intensive reconstruction on trails 1, 2, 6, and 46.

Visitors can expect to find a changed landscape due to the loss of trees and other vegetation.  Every effort was made to preserve the park's natural beauty and unique species while ensuring the safety of all visitors.

"We understand the importance of HBRA to our community, and we are committed to maintaining its beauty and accessibility for all to enjoy," added Jason Blazar, stewardship director, Friends of Buford Park and Mt. Pisgah.

Join us in celebrating the reopening of HBRA on Saturday, March 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Park staff, partners, and volunteers will be on-hand to share their experiences and answer questions about the recovery efforts. Light snacks and hot drinks will be available. Don't miss out on guided walks and more!
